Homecoming 2020 – Closed

We’re all facing a great deal of uncertainty about how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect college athletics, specifically as it impacts the SEC and Mizzou. Plans seem to change frequently, but it’s certain that the football season will be very different. On October 12, the SEC postponed the Homecoming game that was scheduled with the Vanderbilt Commodores due to the high infection rate among the Commodores. The game will now be played on December 12. The Mizzou Alumni Association still plans to proceed with a Homecoming celebration this fall, but it’s now spread out until October 24 when the Homecoming royalty will be crowned during the Kentucky game. Current SEC mandates for football prohibit all marching band pregame and halftime performances. Marching Mizzou will not be allowed on the field under those guidelines.

After taking into consideration the known facts at this time, the Board of Directors in a recent meeting decided to cancel our involvement in any pregame performance this year. It was not an easy decision to make, but it’s clear we were not going to be able to do anything remotely similar to any past year anyway. Mizzou has banned all tailgating anywhere on campus this season.

Not being able to get together to march is not going to stop us from gathering, but this year’s Reunion Weekend will have to be all-virtual. For Reunion Weekend, we ask that everyone still register, but as a virtual marcher. We will ALL be virtual marchers this year. For your registration fee, you will be supporting current and future projects of M2AB and everyone will receive a thank-you gift from the M2AB Board of Directors.  The gift will be delivered to the address you provide during registration and we are working on having some pick-up locations in Columbia and St. Louis if you’d help save us some postage.

Because we won’t be able to get together in person, we’re organizing a virtual Reunion Weekend Tailgate. On Sunday, October 18, we hope everyone can join together in a virtual celebration of past  good times in Marching Mizzou. All generations are invited. There’s no registration fee. The only thing needed is a computer or phone that has Zoom installed on it. The reunion will begin at 6:00pm CDT and last as long as people want to hang around. There will be time to reminisce about your days in Marching Mizzou. Trip to England? Memorable bowl games? Trips to Ireland or other destinations? Bus excursions? Hotel adventures? Meeting lifelong friends? Let’s just keep it family friendly and suitable for all generations.

Reunion Weekend is a little more than a week away and we have a special performance opportunity! Marching Mizzou has invited us to participate in a virtual performance for 2020! This performance is open to all members, but we strongly encourage those who participate to sign up as a virtual marcher for Homecoming so that we can continue to work towards our mission of supporting Marching Mizzou and enriching the lives of our alumni. Here’s how it works. You download a music track and play along to practice the music. When you’re ready, record yourself (audio and video) while listening to the music track and then submit that recording. A Marching Mizzou GTA will mix all the recordings together into a massive virtual alumni band. The recording a la Zoom will be posted on social media and used in various ways the week of the Kentucky game leading up to the official end of this year’s Homecoming celebration. Deadline for submitting your recording is Monday, October 26. Click here for the full details.

There’s another change for 2020. Due to the fact that the University of Missouri cancelled Giving Day last March, we were unable to participate in the usual scholarship appeal. Many of you have been very generous in donating to our M2AB scholarships in the past. We hope you will continue as we have to adopt this new approach, because we want to continue being a part in furthering the education of deserving students in Marching Mizzou. The fall has been tough on them.

One last thing. The alumni band still has two more years remaining on our five-year pledge to help fund the new School of Music Building. It’s now finished and open for use by music students and faculty, but it’s not completely paid for yet. We will continue to honor our pledge and we’d appreciate your continuing support of our efforts by again donating.

If you experience any problems during registration, let us know at m2abreunion@gmail.com.

Spirit Band volunteers needed in St. Louis

Hey, St. Louis-area alums. The Mizzou Store-Kirkwood is having its 3rd annual Mizzou Nights Concert on Thursday, August 2nd, and have invited an Alumni Band to kick it off. This will be mainly fight songs to get the crowd going before the headliners. Wear your Black and Gold and arrive between 6:00 and 6:15pm. Hadley will bring music if you need it. Also, let him know if you need to borrow an instrument. Let’s have a good turnout. If having fun with the alumni band isn’t enough, we’re receiving a donation to the M2 scholarship fund for playing.
